My deepest condolences to your loved ones and those that loved you, of which I’m sure where many to count, whom you touched throughout your life. You left us way too soon but I guess the Lord needed you for other purposes. It was an honor to know you, serve with you, and be on the same commissioning crew of the best ship in the United States Navy; the USS Nicholson DD-982. May you have eternal fair winds and following seas.

Mike was a beloved colleague and friend at Oxford. When I first arrived he spread those nurturing wings he had, and made room for me like he did for all. The heart that he put into everything he is hard to even describe; he gave like some people breathe. He was one of the most relevant people I ever knew. Sail on CMMDR. I know that you are with the Angels.

I was privileged and blessed to be a classmate of Mike's in the USNA Class of 1975, and a company mate of his the last 2 years we were midshipman. Even then, he was a good, kind soul, a blessing to know and serve with. Please know that my prayers will be with you at this time of loss, asking our Lord to envelop you in HIs love and grace and comfort. God Bless You!

Dear Masley family:

I was one of Mike’s plebe year roommates and like every member of our Company I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. He was one of those rare forces of nature who knew how to have a good time and bring everybody else along with him. One couldn’t help but admire his unmatched zest for life, mischievous smile and the perpetual twinkle in his eyes.

It’s been years since I last saw Mike, yet like so many others I treasured every moment we shared together. His legacy of service, commitment and caring for fellow midshipmen, shipmates, NJROTC students, friends and family serve as a beacon to us all. Of all the wonderful traits that defined Mike (sense of character, honor, integrity,...) I believe it was his selfless service and spirit of giving that defined him most. No matter how busy Mike may have been, he ALWAYS made time to help others…and I was the beneficiary of his kindness more times than I can count.

Perhaps Winston Churchill described Mike best when he once said: “You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.” My life, like so many others, was deeply enriched by knowing Mike. He made the world a better place, and I will miss him.

God Bless Mike … and the entire Masley family.

With My Deepest Condolences,

Tim Born

I was devastated to hear of Mike's passing. I was in his company at USNA and he was a dear friend. I'll always remember him as kind-hearted, generous, spirited, and super-smart. I have some wonderful memories of time spent with Mike -- from the practical jokes we would play on each other, to taking care of his beloved 240Z (or was it a 260?), to getting assistance from him on sticky academic problems. Mike was the "go-to" guy in the company for a good hot-dog and a respite from the pace of Academy life. I am sad that we didn't stay in touch, but life and the Navy have ways of keeping us busy beyond our means. You were lucky, as was I, to have him in your life. My deepest condolences -- Weasel

Dear Friends and Family of Michael,
I most recently spoke with Michael in April 2017, when we sat next to each other at the wedding reception an dalso the rehearsal dinner for my Cousin, Rick Easton's son, Trey Easton and his bride, Kate Blamer (now Easton) in Warrenton, Virginia. Before that, Rick reminded me, that I had met Michael at Rick and Kaye's wedding in Florida, in November 1981.

I met Mike very early during Plebe Summer 1971 at the Naval Academy. Adjusting from civilian life to that of a Plebe is a time of great confusion and uncertainty. What always shines through in those times are those who show uncommon kindness, warmth and friendship. Mike was that kind of beacon then and all four years that we were together at the Academy. I never saw him without a least the hint of a smile and never heard any greeting from him that did not evoke his kind and warm spirit. God speed, Mike Masley.

Today the world lost one of the greatest teachers it has ever had. Commander Masley taught over 20 different graduating classes during his time as our beloved NJROTC instructor. But to those of us who knew him, he was so much more than that. He was a mentor, a father figure, and a great friend. He taught me what it was to be a leader, and what kind of man I wanted to be. He embodied the spirit of what we all strive to be, a man who has no regrets, a man who passed on doing the things he loved most in life, trying to make all of us better people. It was the highest honor and greatest privilege to be the alumni and friend who walked him out of the NJROTC spaces for the last time that he would be the Senior Naval Science Instructor of the Oxford NJROTC Unit. Commander Masley always did what he believed was right, and did it his way. With Fair Seas and Following Winds, may you rest in peace, the greatest man I have ever known.

Commander Mike Masley was a dear friend of my father throughout their naval careers. Their friendship, beginning while both were stationed aboard the USS Nicholson, spanned decades and duty stations and through peace and conflict. I myself was born in September of 1988 and while, to my father, Commander Masley was "Mike", to me, he was "Uncle Taz", and my Godfather. To this very day I haven't the faintest idea as to why I called him Uncle Taz, but my first memories of him revolve around Christmas in Newport, Rhode Island, where Uncle Taz would let me hang some stellar Star Trek Christmas ornaments and would make my parents as welcome in his home as family. I was honored to host my Godfather at my wedding in April of this year, and I am so saddened that my wife and I will not be able to share all of the blessings and good news of our lives with Uncle Taz. I know that Uncle Taz was strong in faith and I know that he is with our Heavenly Father, but grief at his absence remains. It is a privilege to share these few memories with his family and all those who loved him; the honor with which Commander Masley lived will be yours to treasure forever. I will remember Uncle Taz as a man who served well, who was a faithful friend to my father, and as one of the very first good men I knew. It was a pleasure and an honor to say that I knew him, and I'm grateful for his life and for the times we shared. For him, I pray for joy and everlasting life in the sight of our Father, and for his family, I pray for peace and comfort in the midst of their distress. I hope for his memory to be shared with happiness and frequency, and I put my faith in the Lord to bring rest and glory to a man we all respected, and who only one of us called Uncle Taz.

Dear Joel, Julie, John and Elaine and family,
So very sorry and saddened to hear of Mike’s passing.
He was always a bigger than life presence at family gatherings. His bear hugs were the absolute best.
As an impressionable teenager, we often sent pen pal letters to one another when he was away at sea. How cool was it to have a cousin in the Navy. One letter in particular, contained the whole typed lyrics of the song “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin and introduced me to the song. Ever since then it’s been one of my favorite songs.
My extended family and I send our condolences, love and prayers.
May Mike’s journey and stairway to heaven be accompanied by angels.

I am terribly shocked and even more terribly saddened at the news of The Commander’s passing. Mike was my across the hall neighbor for the six years (2004-2010) at Oxford High School. Now in my thirteenth year of teaching (and forty second year in the workforce) I have never known anyone who even came even close to possessing Mike’s work ethic. As we all know, his dedication to his JROTC unit was second to none. For certain, the long days and tireless commitment to his country, his work and his students will be his beautiful legacy.

Words cannot express how grateful I am for the opportunity to have worked with Mike and moreover to become his friend. As a new colleague I learned so much about teaching (and about life) from The Commander. I am for sure a better teacher (and person) today because of Mike’s help and influence. If I had to list the most helpful, awesome, generous and inspirational people I have met in my lifetime Michael C. Masely Jr. is right at the very top of the list. And, oh could The Commander chase a bargain!! I will miss you my friend!!

Since my departure from Oxford High School I have kept in close contact with The Commander. Two summers ago at a get together for lunch with a few teacher friends Mike presented me with two beautiful, thoughtful gifts – football memorabilia. Even at my threatening him he refused to take one red cent from me. Know, Mike, that when I wear my Phillip Rivers game jersey I will forever wear it in your memory!!

To Mike’s family, please accept my deepest condolences on his passing. He was a dear friend who will truly be missed. And Commander, I very much look forward to our next lunch date.
With Love,

A Tribute to Mike Masley
From his neighbor Tim Tremblay
November 8, 2017

My wife and I bought the house up the hill from Mike in June of 2010. We were warmly welcomed to the neighborhood by Mike very soon after we moved in.
He introduced himself as a retired Navy Commander, to which I replied; my younger brother is also a commander in the Navy as a chaplain.
He told me of his involvement in the Oxford High School R.O.T.C program and of his many trips with the students.
As time passed, we would occasionally chat in the yard. Mike would always offer me something to help out with the yard. He was a very generous man. Here are some of the things he gave us; 14 Rose of Sharron bushes imported from his property in Newport, RI. a gigantic blue tarp to cover my fire wood with. Wood pallets to stack my firewood on. Grass clippings from his yard to use as mulch in our garden. Last fall Mike told me he had bought a new snow blower and wanted to give me his used one. Which he did, but only after he had it tuned up and had the belts replaced on it.
His generosity and hospitality extended to my wife and newborn daughter as well. Each thanksgiving, Mike would give us a card. Thanking us for being good neighbors. At Christmastime, he would personally deliver to our home a card and some gifts which he had bought somewhere along his travels. To think that a neighbor would be that thoughtful almost blew my mind. We were not family, just next door neighbors.
When my daughter Hannah was born in 2014, I think Mike unofficially adopted her. He would get her gifts for Christmas. A teddy bear from the Vermont teddy bear company, a race track with cars that required double a batteries. When he realized they did not include batteries, he went to his house and immediately returned with about 10 eight packs of double a batteries!

This summer we obtained a wooden play scape for Hannah. Mike noticed it was a little mildewed. So, he gave us a mildewcide mixture in his pump sprayer to clean it with.
My family referred to him as Mr. Mike. We would notice as he diligently mowed his lawn and cared for his property. His lawn was quite a chore, with several steep inclines. He always kept it looking great though!
We would let each other know if we were going to be out of town for an extended time, so we could keep an eye on each other’s houses.
He told me of the time he caught some hoodlums using his property as a drop off point for drug running.
He was a very busy man, even into his 60’s. An inspiration of diligence, commitment and consideration for others.
I and my family will miss our neighbor of 7 years. Even though he was not home for very long at times, he made the neighborhood feel inviting with his kindness.
We extend our condolences to his family and wanted to share with you our perspective on Mike as an amazing neighbor!
May God Bless,
Tim Tremblay

He gave tirelessly to the Oxford community and students and was so respected. Commander was a true gentleman, leader, and historian, and I will always be thankful for the many conversations that we shared in passing on the lower level of Oxford High School. Commander Masley, it was an honor and a privilege to be a part of the 22 year legacy that was your leadership in the Oxford NJROTC program. It was such an honor to be one of your last CO’s and much more an honor to be a friend. Commander, you were much more than just a teacher, you were a mentor, a leader, and a friend. Commander, you taught me so many life lessons that I would not have learned if I had not joined the NJROTC Program in the footsteps of my cousin, and would not be the man I am today. You taught me how to lead a group and how to be humble. I will never forget all of the fun memories we had staying at the school way past the normal after school hours, especially the one time we stayed past midnight preparing for AMI when I was CO. You taught me so much about life and for that I am forever grateful. Thank you, Sir.

To witness Mike being accepted to the Naval Academy was just as sweet for me and his friends as it was for his family. We knew he would go on to do great things. So terribly shocked by Michael’s untimely passing! Colleagues at Oxford High School, I taught art across the hall from him before our move to the new school 15 years ago. Michael was always at school, often late into the evening, and would check in on me and the yearbook staff, note our weary look and return with offerings of hot chocolate and snacks. When I was silkscreening my huge runs of Christmas prints, in addition to the hot chocolate and goodies, he gave me his favorite Christmas album, “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas.” So thoughtful and considerate, he placed it immediately into my CD player so that I could enjoy it without stopping my process so not to risk a clogged stencil with dried ink. I’ll never listen to Christmas music again without thinking of him and his kindness, thoughtfulness and over the top generosity.
I am so sorry for our loss of him. He was a great man, admired for his steadfast commitment and loyalty towards everything that mattered to him. He spoke so highly of all of you, his family, his pride and joy, above all else, including his careers with the Navy and teaching. And you know how much he loved his work!

We extend our deepest condolences to the Masley family and friends. The Holy Scriptures give us comfort and hope. Our lord, Jesus Christ said in John 5:28: "Do not be amazed at this for the hour is coming in which all those in the "memorial tombs" will hear his voice and come out." Knowing of a resurrection and being able to see our loved ones again in the near future can give us comfort and hope. You can read more words of consolation from The Bible . We sincerely hope that these words can soothe your hearts.

Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. Mike and I were roommates in USS Robt. E. Peary (FF 1073) on the 76 Westpac. Know that my prayers are for the family that they will find peace at this time of sorrow.

It was my privilege to have attended High School with Mike. I remember him as a true gentleman and loyal friend to many. I don't think I ever heard him say an unkind word nor did I hear anyone speak poorly of him. He will be missed by more people than he would ever have realized. Saddened by his loss, thoughts and prayers extended to all his family.

We lost a wonderful man, who's service to this country and our community was astounding.
The countless hours given to the kids in NJROTC in Oxford was a gift and blessing. I was fortunate enough to see this man in action. He pushed enough to have them aspire to be great.
He always seemed to make the unimaginable happen. He had connections every where! My deepest condolences to his family, from mine. In some of our hardest times he was routing us on, and that made a difference.
Godspeed, good sir,
Thank you for your incredible service!!

Determined, hard-working, kind, knowledgeable, selfless.

These are just a few words that can be used to describe CDR. Michael C. Malsley, Jr. USN. Ret.

From the moment I became apart of the NJROTC Unit my freshman year, I knew I was joining not only a highly decorated organization run by a masterful leader, but I was joining a family. Everyone of Commanders cadets where his family; his sons and daughters. He helped shape who I am today. I will miss all the late nights setting up for AMI and the stories he would tell. I will miss all the wonderful conferences and camps and events he helped organize:bring us to, to educate us and give us a broader world view. I will miss his laugh, his Masley-isms, his wit and charm. I wish I could have talked to you one last time, Sir. Rest In Peace Commander.

Commander Masley was the reason I joined the unit in the first place and has helped me to become a better leader. When I first met him, I was scared of him. I didn't want to join because I thought he would give me bad grades and scare me out of it. Turns out that he convinced me to go for it and participate in the activities. He has shown me how to snap properly, keep bearing, to do what is right, and most of all, have fun. Before him, I was never sure of myself, but afterwards, he gave me confidence and the strength to go forwards. Even when he was at his worst, he never gave up on me, on all of the cadets. Because of him, I want to keep going and strive for more than just my best. I want to be a life leader, not just in the unit. Thanks to you, Commander, I now finally understand the true meaning of a family. You will be greatly missed from all of us, past and present cadets, and I give all of my condolences to your family. I love you, Commander...I just wish I had the strength and time to tell you that in person. You have changed my life, forever, and will always be remembered as not just a teacher, but a coach, mentor, and friend. Thank you...for everything.

Sad to hear of Mike's death. I hope and pray he didn't suffer. Days on Bob E. were always fun ... sharing a room with him as young Ensigns was a great experience. Mike did lots of good stuff on USS Robert E. Peary serving as 1st Lieutnant, Navigator and Welfare & Recreation officer. Well like by all his men and his officers in the wardroom. God Bless Mike Masley .... nothing more proud than serving in the US Navy in the 20th century ... here's to good times Mike (as I lift a glass of cold beer) ... thanks for all the time buddy.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family. Commander Masley was a truly gifted person, who loved the NJROTC unit and all its cadets, past and present, like his own children. The lessons he taught us, both in the classroom and out in the real world, helped shape us all into the remarkable people we are today. Rest in Peace good sir.....you will be missed more than you will ever know
