Charlton- John R. Hagberg, 88, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018, holding the hand of his loving wife of 37 years, Sue (Butterfield) Hagberg of Charlton, MA.  In addition to Sue, he is survived by his sons Dr. Robert Hagberg and his wife Karen of Avon, CT, Craig Jack Read, Esq. and his wife Ashley of Tiburon, CA; his daughters Dr. Carin A. Hagberg and her husband Steven Roberts, Esq. of Bellaire, TX, Roberta Read of Burlington, VT, and Kristine Hagberg of South Hadley, as well as twelve grandchildren and one great granddaughter.  John was born in Boston, the son of the late John M. Sweeney and Viola C. Hagberg Sweeney. He was predeceased by his former wife, Eleanor Hoermann Hagberg. John had lived in Independent Living at The Overlook Continuing Care Community in Charlton since Dec. 2015, and prior to that had lived in South Hadley for 55 years.  He was the guidance director for the Belchertown School District for twenty-five years, and served as a Staff Sargent in the U.S. Army, with one deployment to Korea during the war.  He was a dues-paying member of the Masons for fifty years.  John enjoyed skiing, golfing, birding, traveling, and reading mystery novels, although his favorite activity was spending time with his beautiful family. John was a steadfast and loyal presence in each of their lives, dependable and loving in every way.   Services will be held privately in Stowe, VT, this summer. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, 48 School St, Webster MA.  A guest book is available at www.shaw-majercik.com, where you may post a condolence or light a candle.
