Obituary

Cherry Valley, MA- Asuncion Bacayao Magtoto, 83, of Cherry Valley, MA, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester, MA. Her husband of 52 years, Honorio Gonzales Magtoto, died in 2006.
She leaves her daughters, Resty M. Weagle and her husband, James of Spencer, MA, Dr. Natividad "Chit" M. Aquino and her husband, Dr. Ed of Parañaque, Philippines, Dr. Manuela "Mel" M. Gendrala and her husband, "Bebot" of Parañaque, Phil, Ines M. Policarpio, of Cavite, Phil, Conrada "Ada" Mackenzie and her husband, Jeffrey of Cherry Valley, MA. Her sons, Fidel B. Magtoto of Cavite, Phil, Valentino "Val" and his wife, Joe-Ann of Quezon City, Phil and several nieces and nephews, 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Born and raised in San Antonio, Basey, Samar, Philippines, she was the daughter of Eleuterio Bacayao and Marcelina Estuita. She was pre-deceased by her sister, Paz Bering and her brother, Salvador Bacayao.
Asuncion attended night public high school in Cavite while she supported herself working as a nanny. She met the love of her life and she became a young bride. She was a full time homemaker up until her older children were able to help take care of the younger ones. She enrolled in fashion school to learn dressmaking and tailoring. She started several small businesses to help make ends meet. She dreamed big for her children and wanted them to pursue higher education and be successful in life. With the help of her big family, she ran a successful buying/selling produce business for more than 2 decades at a local market. She and her husband immigrated to the U.S. in 1987, became naturalized citizens in 1995-96.
She enjoyed gardening and was known for having a green thumb. Her flower, vegetable and herb garden are always beautiful and productive. She worked at Worcester State Hospital (now WRCH) for 11 years, retiring in 2003. To stay busy, she joined the Leicester Senior Center where she met many friends and taught her to crochet and knit. She later used those skills to create beautiful baby blankets, newborn bonnets and mittens. Several local hospitals have received their donations. She was a member of the North Brookfield Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, funeral services will be private. Arrangements are in the care of Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, 48 School Street, Webster, MA.
Memorial donations in Asuncion's memory may be made to the Leicester Senior Center, 40 Winslow Ave. Leicester, MA or to Leicester Food Bank, St. Joseph's St Pius Rectory 759 Main Street, Leicester, MA
