Obituary

Georgianna M. (Smith) Benson 1937 - 2025

Georgianna Mary (Smith) Benson, of Webster, Massachusetts, passed away on November 16, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 87. Born in Webster in 1937, Georgianna was the daughter of the late George H. Smith and Anna R. Smith. She was a lifelong member of the Webster community, a graduate of Bartlett High School, and devoted more than 35 years to American Optical in Southbridge. She worked in the company's in-house optometrist and optician office as an optometric assistant and optician, performing preliminary eye examinations and patient workups before the doctor's exam, and later assisting with eyeglass fitting.  Through her work, Georgianna helped American Optical employees take advantage of the company's benefit program, giving them access to the latest eyewear styles and optical technology. She especially treasured the opportunity to perform preliminary eye examinations for legendary figures such as Joe DiMaggio and Oscar de la Renta, as well as other stars and notable public figures associated with American Optical, including Dorothy Hamill, Arthur Ashe, Bob Griese, and others.  Georgianna was also featured as a published eyewear fashion model for American Optical, appearing in company advertising and catalogs. With elegance, style, and grace, she represented one of America's and Southbridge's most iconic companies during an important era in eyewear.

She will be remembered as a hardworking, dignified, and devoted woman whose life reflected strength, class, and quiet perseverance. Her family and those who knew her will remember her not only for the work she did, but for the presence she carried and the legacy she leaves behind.  Georgianna was predeceased by her husband, Walter Benson, and by her parents, George H. Smith and Anna R. Smith.  She is survived by her son, Steven Morrill, and Elyse Krantz; her granddaughters, Stefani Hicks and her husband, Brian, and Samantha Lopez and her husband, Jordan; her great-granddaughters, Madilyn Hicks and Morgan Hicks; and her step-great-grandson, Jordan Lopez Jr. She is also survived by her goddaughter and cousin, Donna Gaulin, and her husband, Michael. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial for Georgianna on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Louis Church, Lake Street, Webster, with graveside services to follow in Calvary Cemetery, Dudley.  Calling hours at the Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home & Cremation, 48 School Street, Webster, will be held prior to the Mass from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Parking for the funeral home is located directly across the street from the funeral home front entrance.  A memorial guest book is available at www.shaw-majercik.com or on the Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home Facebook page.
