i only met barbara (carp) a couple of times; mostly i knew her through my friendship with corky.  but i recall her irrepressible sense of humor vividly.  whenever i think of her i remember one story she told:  she was working in a fancy furniture store, when one day a man came into the store.  she approached him and said "may i help you?"  he said "yes...i'm looking for a small chest."  barbara paused for a beat, then replied with a sweet smile "...let me find you another salesperson."  she brought a lot of joy and laughter to a lot of people, and i have no doubt that she is still spreading happiness, wherever she is.

for a little while, carp and i worked on her stuff in preparation for her move back to fitchburg, massachusetts.  we already had spent some time with each other and other friends at corky's house.  anyone recall the swim in corky's pool?!?

some time later corky, bobbi, and i visited carp in her home.  wonderful connections. humor, chat, good food.  i was healing from breaking up with my boyfriend.  carp treated me with special caring.  she took me on a snow lift, etc.

when i returned home on long island, she sent me a small, wooden cardinal she carved and painted red in a class; somehow she remembered that my favorite birds were male red cardinals and all kinds of hummingbirds.   as winter approached she knitted then sent me something  to keep my neck warm at bedtime.

only a very special person would do what she did for me--and what she's done for others.. . .

Although I didn't see Barbara all that often, the times I did, I was blessed to be with her along with her laughter and joy. She blessed me with her presence, and I will always remember her smile, and hugs

Dear Ones,

I could have written the same thing as Nettie wrote.  Barbara Carpenter (Carpy) was one of the best friends I ever had.  We spent a lot of time together when she lived on Long Island.  My memories of times with her are endless.  Most of them involved some humor and laughter.  Carp was a fabulous cook and I often was the beneficiary.  We were in touch by email and phone on a regular basis....her in Fitchburg, me in Sarasota, Florida.  I was so grateful that she called me from the hospice to reminisce, laugh and say goodbye for now.  I miss you already, Carpy.  God bless all.  Fondly, Barbara Cornell (Corky)

Barbara was such an inspiration to me. She guided me through many events in my life. I could never have asked for a better friend then Barbara. Even her celebration of life when in hospice was as beautiful as her. I am saddened to have to say goodbye, yet happy that I got to enjoy her company as well. My heart truly goes out to all her family and friends. God blessed you with her in your lives. I will always cherish my fond memories. May you all find comfort in your loving memories and in knowing how much you are in our thoughts and prayers.
In deepest sympathy,
Nettie Sears
