Betty Sue

On May 20, 2024, Betty Sue peacefully passed away in her home. She had been receiving loving care from her three daughters Saralynn, Lee Ann and Melanie. Betty Sue was born in St. Johnsbury, VT on November 19, 1930. She joined her two sisters, Sally and Ginny and her parents Goldie and John Bailey at the farm in Newberry Center, VT. 

Betty’s education started in a one room schoolhouse and later attended St. Johnsbury Academy. Betty graduated from Ware High School, MA in 1948. She then graduated from cosmetology school. Up until 2023 Betty and her older sister Ginny gave each other hair permanents. Aunt Ginny has lost her permanent connection.

Betty was married to Lieutenant Colonel Willard A. Merrill from 1950 to 1967. As an Air Force wife, she moved all over the country. During this time, she improved her bowling skills and learned Bridge. Betty became an avid Bridge player, receiving her Life Master ranking. She was a qualified Director and teacher and directed Bridge games in Greenfield, Brattleboro, VT, Northfield, Keene, NH and most recently, at the West Brookfield Senior Center.

In 1967 Betty aka “Liz”, married Edwin H. La Montagne, Jr. They lived in Northfield, Massachusetts until 2005 when they moved to West Brookfield. They were married for 43 years until Ed’s death December 1, 2010. Betty Sue attended William and Mary College and graduated from Greenfield Community College. She worked as an RN until 2014. She also taught nursing classes at Thompson School of Nursing in Brattleboro, VT. 

Betty has been sewing since the age of seven creating and mending items for family and friends and as a business. Most currently “Grandma’s Creations” have been sold at local craft fairs. Betty Sue has been an active member of the George Whitefield United Methodist Church since 1946. She enjoyed trying new things, was an excellent cook, carpenter and dressmaker, teacher and friend. She loved her family, her church family, and her Bridge family.

Betty was predeceased by her sister Sally Reade, and two step-sons, Mark and Peter LaMontagne.  She is survived by her sister Ginny Robertson of Sterling, MA, three daughters, Saralynn Allen of Northfield, MA, Lee Ann Anderson (Gordon) of Gainesville, FL and Melanie Merrill (Alex Warren) of Brighton, MA, her three step-children, Paul LaMontagne (Nidia) of Huntsville, AL, Steven LaMontagne ( Lori) of Plainfield, MA and Martha Cassesse (Mike) of Ludlow, MA ,along with twelve grandchildren, great  grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. 

A Celebration of her life will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 11:00 at the George Whitefield United Methodist Church.  Donations may be given in Betty Sue’s name to the George Whitefield United Methodist Church or the Food Bank at the Congregational Church, both here in West Brookfield. The Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home, 48 School St., Webster has been entrusted with her arrangements.  A guest book is available where you may post a condolence or light a candle.
