Oxford – Mrs. Christine S. (Antonopoulos) Chaplain, age 81, passed away, in the comfort of her home on Sunday, September 15, 2024.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents, Spiros and Georgia (Barbaresso) Antonopoulos, and by her brother John, and sister, Constandina Rogovin.
Christine was born in Elyria, Ohio and graduated from Lorain High School. She then got a scholarship to St. Basil’s Academy in Garrison, New York. Upon graduation, she was selected to further her Greek studies at the Arsakeion Academy in Athens, Greece.
She spent a year in Athens, where she connected with her many relatives and she has maintained contact until just recently.
Upon returning to America, Christine attended Elmhurst College to take courses for her education certification. Upon certification, she taught elementary school in Lorain County, Ohio. St. Nicholas Church in Ann Arbor, MI then hired her as church secretary, weekday chanter and Greek school teacher.
Her college roommate invited her to Boston, where Christine met Peter Chaplain, whom she married in 1974. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on September 1, 2024.
She leaves four children, Michelle Ganson and her husband Nicholas of Westwood, MA; Nicholas Chaplain and his wife Robin of Hudson, MA; Maria Bottos and her husband Konstantinos of Acton, MA and Justin Chaplain of Oxford, MA. Christine is Yiayia to George and Alexei Ganson, Nicholas, Tatianna and Dimitrios Chaplain, and Nicholas and Makarios Bottos. Christine was preceded in death by a grandson, Evangelos Bottos . Surviving is her sister Antoinette Antonopoulos, of Pawtucket, RI, her brothers Sotirios S. Antonopoulos of Chicago, IL, James Spiros Antonopoulos of Roslindale, MA and several nieces and nephews and many loving cousins.
Christine was a very creative and talented person. She painted many pictures through the years. She built many pieces of wooden furniture. She was a dressmaker and seamstress. She made clothes for Olde Sturbridge Village. She was a pastry cook, especially made pies, winning many prizes through the years. Her Greek pastries were well known. She was an avid gardener and she even built stone walls. Christine will be greatly missed by all.
Calling hours at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 37 Lake Parkway, Webster will be from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. A prayer service will be held at 4:30 pm in the church. Christine’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at 11:30am in Saint Xenia Orthodox Church, 170 N. Lowell Street, Methuen. (Please meet directly at church). Burial will follow in Saint Peter & Paul Cemetery, N. Lowell Street (Rte. 113), Methuen.
