David Chartier Obituary

David Joseph Chartier, surrounded by his loving family, passed peacefully into the next life on 12/1/2022 at his home in Danielson, CT. He was 84. David was born on 7/6/1938, the second son to Dr. Gerard and Rubia Chartier.

David grew up in Danielson, attending St. James School before going on to high school at Assumption Prep in Worcester, MA, graduating in 1956. In 1960 he graduated from Assumption College in Worcester where he played varsity basketball for the Greyhounds. He then attended Central Connecticut State College in New Britain, CT, completing his Master’s Degree in 1962. He also joined the Connecticut National Guard, serving from 1960 to 1966.

On 8/22/1964, a marriage of 58 years began when he and Joy Marie Bellavance exchanged vows. Joy and David later served as marriage counselors together for many years. They loved to travel, enjoyed going to area restaurants, spending time at Alexander’s lake and wintering in Myrtle Beach, SC as often as possible.

In 1963, David took his first teaching job in Canterbury, CT. He later moved on to the Brooklyn, CT school system, retiring from there in 2011, ending a 48 year career as a wonderful teacher, mentor, advisor and coach, setting a fine example for countless school children. He was an avid reader, golfer and gardener. He loved sports of all kinds. He was a master of English grammar, spoke French fluently, had an amazing bank of general knowledge and loved keeping his home and property in immaculate condition. He was a very charitable and kind soul. He was a Godfather to five. He liked being a sort of family historian, always counted on to provide facts and remembrances. He possessed a great sense of humor. And being one of twelve children, he used that to develop nick-names for his siblings. So, in chronological order; The Fuzz, Fabbit, Fenwick, Manikins, Max, Bun, Mitch, Slinky, Weege, Keeza, and Bean. Some of these still are used today.

David so loved his immediate and extended families. He leaves his cherished wife Joy and sons David (Jenjira) and Daniel (Tracy). He is survived by his brothers Gerard, Robert (Gretchen), Marc, Normand (Lynn), Louis (Suzanne), Nicolas (Susan), and sisters Michele (Beth) and Celeste. Surviving also are brothers-in-law David Allen and Jack Bellavance (Wendy), sister-in-law Ann Clark (David Ehler), and a great many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Anne-Marie Allen and brothers Pierre and Joseph.
