Maria Econome of Dudley, MA, passed away peacefully Sunday June 9, 2024, in the loving care of her daughter Lynn of Framingham, MA, where she resided the last years of her life. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Louis, parents Stergios and Panagiota Tsigaridas, brother Aristotle Tsigaridas (wife Helen), sister Elaine Patrinos (husband Chris), and Brother in-law George Econome. In addition to her daughter, she leaves her cherished Godchildren Geroge Patrinos (wife Wendy, deceased) and Penny Frangos (husband Chris), sister-in-law Beatrice Econome along with nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Maria Econome was born at home in Dudley MA the 2nd child of three on May 8, 1924. Her parents came to America from northern Greece in the early 1900s. Family, religion and heritage were important to them so her father along with other men from the town collected money in a cigar box to build a Greek Church that was established on High Street in Webster, MA. This Church was later rebuilt on Lake Parkway after a fire and became her beloved St. Constantine & Helen Church.
She was an excellent student, artist and basketball player in high school. She was awarded the Becker Scholarship award, an amazing feat for a woman in those days but as World War II broke out, rather than attend college, she chose to stay home and help her family with a job in an office at Waterhouse (which later became a part of Ethan Allen Furniture). Never one to want to be the center of attention, though she was offered the job of office manager, she declined and was happy just being a contributor to the team as a purchasing and inventory control manager. Her negotiation skills and joy of purchasing transcended into her personal life as those who knew her through the years knew the passion of shopping was one of her greatest hobbies.
At a GOYA dance in 1952 she met her beloved husband Louis. Family and Church were always the center of their lives and they were blessed with a daughter after 10+ years of marriage. The Church her parents helped to establish in the year Maria was born continued to be the center of her world. Through the years since childhood to her now 100th year, she had been an active member. Her smile, sincere interest in others and generous nature along with her contributions as choir member, Sunday School teacher, Philoptochos officer and member are some of the reasons she was honored by the Bishop several years ago. She always helped others; whether it was driving some of the elderly weekly to do their grocery shopping, writing letters to relatives in Greece or just taking time to listen and make people feel special. Her spirit and grace will always be cherished and a gift from God. May her memory be eternal and we all try to emulate the love she brought to the world.
