Muriel Stelmach Obituary

DUDLEY - It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Muriel M (St Marie) Stelmach, 93. She passed peacefully on November 25, 2023, due to complications from Parkinson’s Disease. Her loving family was with her.

A life-long resident of Dudley, Muriel was the daughter of the late William C St Marie Sr and Florence (St Germain) St Marie.  She was a 1948 graduate of Bartlett High School in Webster, and worked many years alongside her husband at Bernie’s Service Station handling all of the bookkeeping.  When they added  Massachusetts automotive inspections to their mechanical work, Muriel was known as “Madame Inspector” for her willingness to get under cars and perform complete auto inspections.

She is survived by her daughter - Michelle M Stelmach of Dudley; two sons - Bernard C Stelmach Jr and his wife Robin A Stelmach of Foxborough, MA,      and William J Stelmach of Dudley; a sister - Elaine St Marie of Dudley; four granddaughters - Skye Stelmach; Kelsey Barbour; Rebekah Stelmach; and Emily Stelmach; two grandsons - Dennis (DJ) Stelmach and Ben Stelmach; and two great-grandchildren - Ian Villegas and Mikayla Strom. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, and a favorite cousin, Jan Biziewski of Rancho Cordova, CA, and his wife Deborah. Muriel was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Bernard C (Dusky) Stelmach Sr, and two sons, Dennis J Stelmach and Darren A Stelmach.

Muriel enjoyed crocheting and made hundreds of afghans for friends, relatives, babies, and the homeless.  She also was very adept at crocheting with string and made many starched Christmas snowflakes and angel ornaments for her family and friends.  And in 1990, she designed, crocheted, and presented a unique 5-panel altar cloth to St Anthony of Padua Church.

A baseball fan, she attended baseball games with Dusky following Bernie Jr’s teams all over New England.  She loved to sing and when the words began to fail her, she hummed everyday even if it meant making up a tune, thus inspiring a favorite T-shirt that says, “Happy is she who hums in the name of the Lord.”  She was very active in the St Anthony of Padua Church before her illness.

The funeral has been entrusted to the Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home in Webster.  The funeral is private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Muriel’s name to the Rose Monahan Hospice Home online at or by phone at 508-658-7700.  You may post a condolence or light a candle at
