Peter A. Matteau
1947 – 2026
Peter A. Matteau, age 78, of Pascoag, RI, beloved husband of Judith (Olinski) Matteau, died peacefully on Sunday, February 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at home.
Peter was born in Worcester, MA, son of the late Wilfred and Grace (Magnant) Matteau. Peter graduated from Bartlett High School, Class of 1965. He was an electrical-mechanical technician, specializing in forklift repair. In his retirement, he worked part time at Putnam Chrysler.
Peter was proud to have been a veteran of the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in Vietnam. After his discharge, Peter was united in marriage in September of 1969 to the former Judith Olinski. Peter was also a Native American and was a member of the Iroquois Tribe. Within the tribe, he was known as Silver Eagle.
He was a lifetime member of the National V.F.W. and had previously been a member of Post #7749 until the Post was closed. He was also a member of the Albert J. Breault Post in Putnam, CT. He held several offices within the Lake Washington Association and was also a member of the Glocester Senior Center. He enjoyed playing billiards, NASCAR racing and in his younger years competed at the Thompson Speedway. Peter and Judy attended the Daytona 500 twice and also a race at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN. Peter most enjoyed spending time with Judy, his sons and especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, Judith Matteau, Peter is survived by three sons, Peter Matteau II of Pascoag, RI, Adam Matteau and his wife Holly of Dayville, CT and Andre “A.J.” Matteau and his wife Lindsey of Pascoag, RI. He also leaves five adored grandchildren, Torianna Matteau, Ashley Matteau, Andre Matteau II, Leah Matteau and Odin Matteau.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours for Peter on Sunday, March 8, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, in the Shaw-Majercik Funeral Home & Cremation, 48 School Street, Webster. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 18 East Main Street, Webster. PLEASE MEET DIRECTLY AT THE CHURCH. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, Webster with the Webster-Dudley Veteran's Counsel.
